Your fleet is spending more than it needs to
Driver behaviour, idle time, unoptimised routes — these invisible costs add up to thousands per year. Transpoco makes them visible and actionable from day one.
How to Use This Fuel Cost Calculator
This tool covers three distinct use cases: a single journey, your regular commute, and managing a full commercial fleet. Choose the tab that matches your need and enter the figures below.
Journey Calculator
Enter the total distance in miles, select your fuel type, input the current pump price in pence per litre, and enter your vehicle's MPG. Use the quick-select presets to fill the MPG field instantly. Choose one-way or return journey, then click Calculate.
Commute Cost Calculator
Enter your one-way commute distance and how many days per week you travel. The calculator returns your daily, weekly, monthly and annual fuel spend.
Fleet Fuel Cost Calculator
Built for fleet and transport managers. Enter your total number of vehicles, average daily mileage, fuel type and fleet MPG. The calculator returns total fleet fuel spend and estimates how much you could save with telematics.
Current UK Fuel Prices
The figures below reflect UK average pump prices as of April 2026. Always check your local station for the most accurate figures.
How to Calculate Fuel Cost: The Formula
The UK sells fuel in litres but measures efficiency in miles per gallon (MPG). One UK imperial gallon equals 4.546 litres, which differs from the US gallon (3.785 litres).
Petrol & Diesel Formula
Fuel Cost (£) = (Distance ÷ MPG) × 4.546 × (Price in pence ÷ 100)
Example: 200 miles, 40 MPG, petrol at 148p/litre
= (200 ÷ 40) × 4.546 × 1.48 = £33.64
Electric Vehicle Formula
EV Cost (£) = (Distance ÷ Miles per kWh) × (kWh price in pence ÷ 100)
Example: 200 miles, 3.5 mi/kWh, 24p/kWh
= (200 ÷ 3.5) × 0.24 = £13.71
Fleet Fuel Consumption Formula
Daily Fleet Cost (£) = Vehicles × Daily Miles × (4.546 ÷ MPG) × (Price ÷ 100)
Example: 10 vans, 80 miles/day, 38 MPG, diesel at 153p
= 10 × 80 × 0.1196 × 1.53 = £146.40/day · £43,900/year
What Affects Fuel Costs for UK Fleets?
Fuel spend is shaped by a combination of external market forces and internal operational factors you can directly influence.
Government Intervention & Fuel Duty
UK fuel duty stands at 52.95p per litre, roughly a third of the pump price. VAT at 20% is applied on top.
Crude Oil & Financial Markets
Brent crude is priced in USD, so GBP/USD exchange rate movements directly affect UK pump prices.
Geographic Area
Rural locations can see prices 8-12p higher per litre than supermarket forecourts in urban England.
Vehicle Type & Load Weight
A van carrying full payload uses significantly more fuel than the same vehicle running empty.
Driver Behaviour
Harsh acceleration, excessive idling and speeding can increase fuel consumption by 20-30%.
Route Efficiency
Unoptimised routes inflate mileage directly. Route planning software can cut fleet mileage by 10-20%.
How to Reduce Fleet Fuel Costs
Fuel is typically the second-largest operating cost for UK fleets after labour. These approaches deliver the highest return on effort.
Monitor Driver Behaviour in Real Time
Telematics identifies harsh braking, rapid acceleration and excessive idling. Fleets using behaviour monitoring typically see 10-15% fuel reduction within 90 days.
Optimise Routes Across the Fleet
Route optimisation eliminates unnecessary mileage and avoids congestion. Even a 5% mileage reduction translates to thousands of pounds in annual savings.
Maintain Tyre Pressure Fleet-Wide
Under-inflated tyres can raise fuel consumption by 3-5%. For a fleet running 10 vehicles at 80 miles per day, that costs hundreds of pounds per month.
Eliminate Unnecessary Idling
An idling diesel van consumes roughly 0.8 litres per hour. Telematics can flag excessive idle events automatically.
Plan Your EV Transition Strategically
For routes under 100 miles, electric vehicles already cost significantly less per mile than diesel, particularly with home or depot charging.
Use Fleet Fuel Cards
Fuel cards provide discounted pump prices, consolidated invoicing and detailed transaction-level reporting.
