National Broadband Ireland (NBI) reduced fleet emissions by 22 tons of CO2 in just seven months by switching to HVO fuel and leveraging Transpoco’s HVO reporting tools. The initiative not only achieved their emissions target but proved that practical, measurable decarbonisation is possible today. Read on to learn how they achieved this.

The Challenge

In 2025, National Broadband Ireland (NBI) faced a critical sustainability challenge: how to decarbonize their fleet while maintaining service coverage across rural Ireland. With electric vehicles not yet suitable for their extensive rural operations NBI needed an immediate, practical solution to meet their 2025 Scope 1 emissions targets as part of their Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requirements.

The Solution

NBI partnered with Transpoco, Circle K, and Ayvens to implement a strategic Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel initiative:

Smart Infrastructure Setup

  • NBI & Transpoco tagged ~30 Circle K fuel stations nationwide, where HVO is available.
  • NBI utilised Transpoco’s reporting functionality to track emissions and identify missed HVO opportunities.

Strategic Driver Engagement

  • Pilot Phase (June 2025): NBI Selected 5 influential field engineers across rural Ireland.
  • Full Rollout (July 2025): Combined top-down management support with bottom-up peer influence from pilot drivers.
  • Monthly email updates highlighting missed HVO opportunities at diesel pumps.
  • Direct conversations during regular driver check-ins to reinforce adoption.

The Results

22 tons of CO2 saved in just 7 months (June–December 2025)

  • 3 tons during pilot phase
  • 19 tons during full rollout

2025 CSRD emissions target achieved

  • Met 2025 Scope 1 CSRD emissions target
  • Would have missed target without HVO initiative
  • Critical success for public ESG commitments

Seamless adoption across the fleet with minimal operational disruption.

Why It Worked

Zero vehicle modifications – HVO works with existing diesel fleet

Automated reporting – flagged missed HVO opportunities in real time

Cultural buy-in – Peer influence and open communication drove adoption

| “The success of our HVO initiative came down to two things: people and data. By starting with our most experienced field engineers, we created natural champions who could influence their teams through day-to-day conversations. But it was the Transpoco reporting that kept everyone accountable and kept HVO top of mind. That combination is what got us to 22 tons of CO2 savings in just 7 months."
