Iberia, a leading Spanish airline and ground handling provider, selected a telematics solution from Transpoco to obtain real time visibility and operational data across its ground support equipment (GSE) fleet.
Iberia is the leading carrier on routes between Europe and Latin America and operates flights to 135 destinations in 47 countries across Europe, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. In addition to its airline operations, Iberia performs ground handling services for more than 65 airlines.
To support these operations, Iberia manages a large fleet of ground support equipment across 29 Spanish airports. This fleet includes a wide range of motorised assets used for airport operations such as baggage tractors, belt loaders, service vehicles and other ramp equipment.
With more than 2,000 GSE vehicles operating daily, Iberia required greater visibility over how these assets were being used. Managing such a large fleet across multiple airports presents significant operational challenges, including vehicle availability, scheduling efficiency, fuel consumption and regulatory compliance.
To address these challenges, Iberia decided to test the Transpoco advanced fleet management solution on 200 ground support vehicles operating at Madrid (MAD) and Barcelona (BCN) airports. The objective of this pilot project was to evaluate the system’s ability to improve fleet visibility, optimise asset usage and support operational decision making, with the potential to roll out the solution across additional airports if successful.

Transpoco deployed its telematics system on the selected GSE vehicles, enabling Iberia to collect real time operational data and gain greater control over its ground fleet.
The platform provided Iberia with tools to plan, schedule, track and manage vehicle activity directly on airport ramps. Through the integration of GPS tracking and RFID driver identification, the system allowed Iberia to monitor vehicle movements, identify which driver was operating each asset and analyse how equipment was being used throughout the day.
With real time location tracking, airport operations teams could instantly view the availability of vehicles, helping them allocate equipment more efficiently and respond quickly to operational needs. This level of visibility also made it easier to identify underutilised assets, improve scheduling and optimise fleet usage across busy airport environments.
In addition, the system provided detailed reporting on vehicle activity, allowing Iberia to better understand usage patterns, improve maintenance planning and monitor compliance with airport regulations.
Following the successful implementation of the Transpoco solution, Iberia achieved significant operational improvements across its ground support fleet.
With access to real time data and improved fleet visibility, Iberia was able to optimise asset utilisation and reduce unnecessary vehicle usage. As a result, vehicle related operational costs were reduced by more than 60 percent, while fuel consumption decreased by over 10 percent.
The system also helped Iberia ensure full compliance with AENA airport regulations, thanks to improved tracking, reporting and operational oversight. In addition, the enhanced monitoring capabilities contributed to improved safety and better coordination of ramp operations.
Due to the success of the pilot project, Iberia awarded Transpoco the contract to expand the implementation of its advanced fleet management solution across a wider range of ground support equipment at multiple airports within its Spanish network.

“Prior to using Transpoco, we were with another company for a number of years. We moved because of a combination of issues with the trackers and the support just wasn’t there. The trackers weren’t very reliable. We were constantly chasing up trackers that weren’t working”
