4 main concerns of enterprise fleet managers

23 October 2015 09:00:00 BST | Fleet Management 4 main concerns of enterprise fleet managers

Enterprise fleet managers work for large companies who own a lot of vehicles. What are their main sources of worry?

Fleet managers have to deal with a lot of responsibilities, ranging from the health and safety of employees and other road users to managing fuel costs and protecting assets—the list could go on and on… Fleets can be big or small but they all share similar issues and sources of concern; some of which are quite typical for all enterprise fleet managers.

Enterprise fleet managers usually work for multinationals or large companies who own a lot of vehicles, with many drivers working across a range of geographic areas; this presents an array of unique challenges.

So what are four of the main concerns that enterprise fleet managers have to cope with?

#1 - Having to deal with huge amounts of information
Enterprise fleet managers, depending upon the size of their fleets, have to manage a lot of data and control a host of activities: safety, driver hiring process, fuel bills and so on… do you think this is an easy task, relying on nothing but paperwork?

#2 - Optimising fleet assets usage
The bigger a company is the more assets will be at a fleet manager’s disposal. This can be positive, but also negative as it requires more management. You need to be on the ball to avoid losing track of vehicles; ideally they are all utilised as much as possible, considering the on-going cost of each vehicle. Not having all your vehicles under control may lead not only to under usage but also to the possibility of “forgetting” about them (and their maintenance) altogether—they may well end up not being roadworthy.

#3 - Dealing with issues as soon as they appear
Within a big fleet, issues can easily go unnoticed if you don’t keep tabs on all your vehicles. Problems, especially if small, can remain hidden and then escalate before eventually being discovered, or, even worse, after an incident that can have serious consequences (and incur significant loss).

#4 - Managing a team located in different geographic areas
If you have a big fleet, chances are that some of your drivers are located in remote areas making communication a problem (even simply keeping track of vehicle locations) if you have depots in different regions, or even countries, but manage them centrally.
