Many of us wait until the last minute to take action on something. Fleet management is no exception... find out more on how fleet managers procrastinate!

Many of us wait until the last minute to take action on something. Fleet managers are no exception: one of their recurrent mistakes is putting off the need to thoroughly assess their fleet’s activity for fear of what they might find out...

There are several reasons why we procrastinate—don’t worry we all do it, it’s human nature!—here are some of the most common:

#1 - We procrastinate when we find something we have to do unpleasant
Unpleasant, boring, difficult, or simply knowing that what we are about to do is going to cause us a terrible headache… it could be having a discussion with a driver, trying to figure out why that vehicle is always being serviced while we are buried under a mountain of bills; and the receipts… so much higher than expected…

#2 - We procrastinate when we are unorganized
Connected to point #1—workload is often not as organized as it could be when there are just so many tasks to consider. Fleet managers are expected to address multiple issues and are constantly at the mercy of many pressing demands. Although managers should be prioritizing and focusing on the most urgent of matters, postponing other, peripheral, issues cannot continue indefinitely.

#3 - We procrastinate when we are perfectionists
It might sound funny, but it isn’t. We actually wait for the ideal time and conditions in order to take action, don’t we? Having the budget, waiting for the perfect window of opportunity in order to implement changes or take important decisions etc. But, fleet managers, is there ever a perfect moment?

#4 - We procrastinate when we do not have decision-making skills
Assuming we do not have enough data to make the right decisions is one example, or we simply don’t want to be responsible for doing the wrong thing (feelings all too familiar for anyone running a fleet).

If we are familiar with some, or all of these points we should also be able to appreciate that fleet management software is the ultimate anti-procrastination strategy tool. Consider for a moment all the unpleasant consequences of dilly-dallying, not looking into something or even the costs of waiting for the ideal time that never quite arrives…
