The discussion around safety and speeding offences is unfortunately a neverending one. The next initiative on this is the slow down day for 21st Oct 2016.

Due to the increase in speeding collisions leading to fatalities in 2016 and speeding offences, An Garda Siochána and the RSA (Road Safety Authority) conducted a slow-down day in May this year with the aim of sensitising fleets and drivers to the dangers of speeding.

A new “Slow down day” is now planned for October 21st reminding drivers of the need to comply with speed limits, as the higher the speed the greater the likelihood of a collision happening and the more severe its outcome.

Excessive and inappropriate speed is a major contributory factor in road traffic collisions, further confirmed by the recent RSA report on fatal collisions between 2008 and 2012 which found that excessive speed was a contributory factor in one third of all fatal collisions during that time.

Public and private sector fleet operators are also being asked to participate in the initiative by circulating among the employees the key message to “Slow Down” and, whether driving for business or private purposes, to always drive within the speed limit and at a speed appropriate to the prevailing conditions.

Speeding is not only a major contributing factor in any collision, it also compromises road safety, impacts on fuel consumption and leads to increased wear and tear on vehicles. There is a business case for companies to understand that safety not only benefits the community (and, in any event, involves mandatory stipulations) but it also has the added bonus of lowering fuel consumption and global fleet costs.

Monitoring driver behaviour is the method by which fleets can begin to train their staff and decrease speeding, reducing the possibility of collisions and having a positive impact on road safety. Let us know if this is something you want to get started!
